Sotto Voce is a visual meditation on the age-old questions of how much light is required to dispel darkness and just how is it to be found - this radiance - when surrounded by so much darkness? I like these questions in all their forms and implications. There is, perhaps, a quality of waiting in these images: for the story to begin, for the exchange of memory, or memory once removed. Stories told in voices so low that the teller and the told must lean forward, quieten down, listen carefully.
These are images that began as scenes of the ordinary. I found within them a deep mysteriousness, and I sought to exhume from each one, its deep radiance and integrity of emotion.
The 82 images in the book were discovered in many different locations around the world. They share a conceptual framework and structural style. Part of what they express is my particular reverence for the quiet visual voice and the unresolved narrative. The majority of images originate from negatives made using Kodak HIE Infrared Film, a film that was discontinued several years ago.
The book is 158 pages, hardcover with dust jacket, 30x30 cm, published in 2010. There are two immaculate signed copies available.
